Sie waren die Superstars der
60er: Esther und Abi Ofarim. Mit Songs wie "Cinderella
Rockefella", "Melodie einer Nacht", "Sing
Hallelujah" und "Morning of My Life" sangen sie sich in
den Pop-Olymp. Ende der 60er trennte sich das Duo, auch privat.
Während der Jüdischen
Kulturtage tritt Esther Ofarim, 63, heute im Berliner Ensemble auf. Mit
einem total gemischten Programm: englische, deutsche, hebräische, französische
und spanische Lieder. Der BZ gab sie
vorher ein Interview.
Frau Ofarim, in
welcher Sprache drücken Sie sich am liebsten aus?
Ich lebe seit 16 Jahren in Hamburg. Deutsch spreche ich am
meisten. Aber Hebräisch bleibt immer meine Muttersprache.
Was bedeutet für Sie Heimat?
Heimat - das sind Erinnerungen und Erfahrungen. Meine Wurzeln
sind in Israel, aber Heimat ist, wo ich mein Zelt aufgeschlagen
habe.
Wie oft fahren Sie nach Israel?
Meine Geschwister leben dort. Ich besuche sie dreimal im
Jahr.
Sind Sie praktizierende Jüdin?
Nein. Aber es gibt für mich nur diese eine Religion. Ich gehöre
dazu, und ich kann mir keine andere vorstellen. Wie man in Berlin sagt:
Und das ist auch gut so.
Wie sehen Sie die Entwicklung für den Nahost-Friedensprozeß nach dem
Tod Arafats?
Es gibt wieder eine Hoffnung. Die Schmerzen sind aber auf beiden
Seiten sehr tief. Man kann nur hoffen, daß es nun eine neue Verständigungsebene
gibt.
Haben Sie noch Kontakt zu Abi Ofarim? Könnten Sie sich ein Comeback
vorstellen?
Es gibt keinen Kontakt. Ich habe auch kein Interesse an einem
Comeback.
Sie leben heute sehr zurückgezogen. Warum?
Ich bleibe doch nicht ewig die zwanzigjährige Popsängerin. Ich
habe jetzt andere Bedürfnisse. Der Rummel damals - die Presse, die
Partys - das war nie mein Stil. Ich wollte nur normal leben. Und das
mach ich heute auch.
Ihr Sohn studiert in Berlin. Werden Sie irgendwann Berlinerin?
Ich denke schon darüber nach. Ich war das letzte Mal im April
in Berlin. Aber die Stadt ist mir viel zu groß und fremd.
Eine große Frage zum Abschluß: "Der Untergang" im Kino,
"Good bye, Adolf Hitler!" in der Volksbühne. Ist das Thema
"Drittes Reich" wieder besonders aktuell?
Ich glaube, das Thema war
und ist immer aktuell. "Der Untergang" habe ich mir selbst
nicht angesehen, ich gehe nicht oft ins Kino. Aber es ist gut, daß es
so was gibt. Man darf nicht vergessen. Info: Heute (27.

During the Jüdische Kulturtage (Jewish culture days) Esther Ofarim, 63
years old, gives a performance
with the Berliner Ensemble, today.
With a totally mixed up program: English, German, Hebrew, French and

Mrs. Ofarim, which is your favourit language, that you're using?
I live in Hamburg for 16 years. I speak German at most. But Hebrew is my
mother tongue.
What does homeland mean to you?
Homeland - that are memories and experiences. My roots are in Israel,
but homeland is, where I'm living.
How often do you visit Israel?
My brothers and sisters are living there. I visit them 3 times a year.
Are you a practicing Jew?
No. But for me only this religion exists. I belong to this and I cannot
imagine any other. As you're saying in Berlin: And that is as well as it
is.
How do you feel about the middle east's process of peace after the
death of Arafat?
There exists hope again. But the pain is very deep on both sides.
You only can hope, that there will be a new basis of agreement.
Do you still are in contact with Abi Ofarim? Do you could imagine a
Comeback?
There is no contact. I am not interested in any comeback.
You're living very retired. Why?
I cannot be the 20 year old pop singer for ever. I need other things.
The bustle there - the press, the parties - that never has been my
style.
I always wished to live as normal as I could. And that's what I do now.
Your son is studying in Berlin. Will you ever be part of Berlin?
I'm thinking about it. The last time I've been in Berlin was in April.
But the city is much too big and strange for me.
Last a big question: "Der Untergang" in cinema, "Good
bye, Adolf Hitler!" in the Volksbühne. Is the theme of the
"Drittes Reich" again very popular?
I think, this theme always has been up to date. I have not watched
"Der Untergang", I don't go to the cinema very often. But it
is good, that this is existing. You mustn't forget. Info: Today
